The Etiquette of Attending and Hosting a Summer Pool Party

Pool parties are a staple of summertime fun that we look forward to all year long! To make sure everyone has a great time, it’s important to follow some key guidelines whether you’re hosting or a guest at a pool party. From the initial planning stages to the final farewell, (and what never to do as a guest!), here are all around tips on pool party etiquette:

 Hosting a Pool Party

 1. Send Clear and Detailed Invitations

   – Timely Invitations: Send out invitations at least two weeks in advance to give guests ample time to plan. It is okay to include both a start time and an end time so guests know what to expect in terms of how long the party will last.

   – Details Matter: Clearly state the date, time, location, and any specific instructions such as items to bring (like swimsuits, sunscreen and towels).

   – RSVP: Request RSVPs by a specific date and time to manage headcount for food, drinks, and seating arrangements.

 2. Prepare the Pool and Surrounding Area

   – Safety First: Make sure the pool area is safe for all guests. This includes having life vests and floatation devices available, especially if children will be attending. Even if children are able to swim, it’s important to always have an adult (or multiple adults who take shifts) who can swim in charge of watching the pool at all times.

   – Cleanliness: Clean the pool thoroughly ahead of the party; Check and adjust chemical levels as needed, and ensure the surrounding area is free of debris.

   – Comfortable Seating: Provide enough seating for all guests, including shaded areas with umbrellas or canopies to protect from the sun.

 3. Set Up a Refreshment Station

   – Food Variety: Pool parties are typically very casual when it comes to food and beverages provided. Offer a mix of snacks and meals that cater to various dietary preferences. Include fresh fruits, finger foods, and some healthy options. Be sure to ask your guests as soon as they attend if they have any food allergies or dietary restrictions so you can be prepared.

   – Drinks: Keep a variety of beverages on hand, such as water, soft drinks, and perhaps a signature poolside cocktail. Make sure non-alcoholic options are available.

   – Coolers and Ice: Ensure there’s enough ice to keep drinks cold and have coolers strategically placed around the area for easy access.

-If you are throwing a “potluck” style party where everyone brings something to contribute, then be sure to assign people a specific category or dish (salad, dessert, wine etc) so you don’t end up with all desserts (although that might be fun too!)

 4. Provide Necessities

   – Towels and Sunscreen: Have extra towels and sunscreen available for guests who might forget theirs.

   – Pool Accessories: Supply pool noodles, floats, and toys to enhance the fun.

   – Trash Bins: Place trash and recycling bins in convenient locations to keep the area clean and free of things to slip or trip on.

 5. Set Ground Rules

   – Safety Rules: Inform guests of any safety rules, such as no running around the pool, diving regulations, and supervision requirements for children.

   – House Rules: Communicate any house rules, like designated smoking areas or pet policies.

 Attending a Pool Party

 1. Respond to Invitations Promptly

   – RSVP: Respect the host’s planning efforts by responding to the invitation as soon as possible. If you have any food allergies, let the host know ahead of attending.  Always ask what you can bring. If the host says nothing, then still bring a host gift as a gesture of appreciation.

 2. Dress Appropriately

   – Swimwear: Wear a swimsuit that is comfortable and appropriate for the occasion.

   – Cover-Ups: Bring a cover-up or change of clothes for when you’re out of the pool.

 3. Bring Necessities

   – Towels: Always bring your own towel, but be prepared to use a spare if needed.

   – Sunscreen: Protect your skin by applying sunscreen before arriving and reapplying as necessary.

   – Pool Accessories: Consider bringing your own floaties, goggles, or pool toys if desired.

4. Is it okay to jump in the pool first?

   – Always ask before you jump into the pool! While it is okay to be the first one in, it’s respectful to ask the host if it’s a good time to jump in before you do so!

5. Respect the Host’s Property

   – Clean Up After Yourself: Dispose of trash properly and keep your area tidy.

   – Follow Rules: Adhere to any rules set by the host regarding pool use, safety, and general behavior.

6. Be Courteous to Other Guests

   – Share Pool Space: Be mindful of how much space you’re occupying in the pool and make room for others.

   – Volume Control: Keep conversations at a reasonable volume and be considerate of neighbors if the party is in a residential area.

7. To Share or Not to Share?

   – Often pool parties have open potluck coolers with beverages that people bring to include. If there is a beverage you would like to try that you did not bring or that has not been offered to you, it’s good manners to ask the person who brought it if you can have some before you dive in!

By following these pool party tips, hosts can ensure a well-organized and enjoyable event, while guests can contribute to a fun atmosphere and respect the host’s efforts. With proper etiquette, pool parties can be memorable and fun for everyone involved!
