Vape Etiquette 101

With the surprising recent statistic from FDA.gov that 1 in 20 Americans vape, we thought it was time to break down the etiquette rules of vaping. Practicing vaping etiquette is important to ensure everyone’s comfort and respect for personal boundaries, homes and health (yes there are still secondhand effects when vaping). Let’s dive into some key tips, starting with the most fundamental one:

1. Assume You Should Step Outside

As a rule of thumb, it’s best to assume that you should step outside to vape unless explicitly told otherwise. This keeps indoor spaces comfortable for non-vapers and allows them to enjoy their surroundings without inhaling vapor. When in doubt, head outdoors, and you’ll rarely go wrong. Vaping is classed in the US as “smoking” and you therefore should still follow “no smoking” rules when you see signage in public or private areas such as restaurants, airplanes, cinemas and bars.

2. Ask Your Host Where Best to Go

If you’re attending a gathering at someone’s home, take a moment to ask your host about the best spot for vaping. They’ll appreciate your consideration, and you’ll have a designated area where you can enjoy your vape without inconveniencing others.

3. Respect Non-Vapers

Make sure to consider the smell that some vape smoke produces. Always be mindful of non-vapers’ comfort and avoid blowing clouds in their direction. Keep a reasonable distance, and if you notice someone is uncomfortable, consider moving even farther away. Avoid vaping anywhere near children. According to a 2017 CDC study on vaping, along with nicotine, non-vapers are also exposed to superfine particles from secondhand vape aerosol which has a chance to increase cardiovascular disease.

4. Use Discretion in Public Spaces

In public places like parks, sidewalks, or outdoor events, remember that vaping etiquette extends to these areas as well. Be aware of the people around you and avoid creating massive clouds that might engulf those nearby. Choose low-wattage settings or discreet vaping devices when you’re in shared spaces.

5. Dispose of Waste Responsibly

Whether you’re at home or in a public space, make sure you dispose of your vaping waste responsibly. Don’t litter by leaving empty e-liquid bottles, used coils, or vape-related trash lying around. Properly dispose of these items to keep your environment clean, safe and appealing to all.
